Performing Arts - Grades 2 - 6

It’s been a busy end of term 1 and start of term 2 in the Performing Arts room!

The most exciting news is that the cast of our Gr 5 / 6 Production, The Wizard of Oz was finalized at the end of last term. Congratulations to the chosen students of the cast! It was an extremely hard decision to make, with such talent across the board in both year levels. I had an overwhelming number of auditions this time around, 94, which is 2 / 3’s of the two cohorts! There were also 3 dance ensembles chosen so congratulations to those students too.

Each Grade 5 / 6 class will be learning their class song and dance for the show soon. In the meantime, the cast have started rehearsals and it’s already looking fabulous.

Grade 2

The Grade 2 students have completed their music unit from term 1. Our focus will now shift to dance! We have started to learn simple dance sequences to the count of 8 dance beats. The enthusiasm and excitement for dance is SO high in this year level!

Grade 3 / 4

These two year levels completed their self-composed music performances on percussion instruments last term with great success. We shall also be dancing in this term with our main theme being line dancing. We have some fun dance steps to learn this term, with hopefully a big showcase performance to come! Can we take any guesses as to what our dance genre will be?!

Grade 5 / 6

We are finishing our Ukulele unit this coming week in Grades 5 / 6. Some students have shown wonderful progress, having been only able to play one chord, to now confidently strumming a 4-chord song. “Riptide” by Vance Joy has been the song goal to finish this unit off with, and some classes sound absolutely amazing playing this song!

Big term ahead with the production and so much dancing. Looking forward to it all!

Junior Performing Arts

Foundation and Level 1 students have been developing their understanding of beat and rhythm through a range of engaging musical activities. Both year levels particularly enjoyed exploring sound and melody on the glockenspiels.

Foundation students practised keeping a steady beat, performing simple rhythms, and creating their own version of our Mr Sun song while a partner sang along with actions.

Level 1 students learnt to play Hot Cross Buns on the glockenspiels last week, and this week focused on collaborating with classmates to perform the melody together.

Junior Visual Arts

Things got pretty ‘fishy’ towards the end of Term One. Some of the below photos prove my point. 😊

Junior Library

Once again, Foundation & Level 1 students have shown beautiful manners and how they can follow the group plan during our browsing and borrowing routines. They enjoyed story-time and were eager to make predictions about our stories. Well done all!

Auslan

Foundation

Over the last two weeks foundation students have been learning to sign the Auslan alphabet. They have enjoyed singing 3 songs using Auslan signing:

1.        Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

2.        Rainbow Colour Song

3.      Library song

This week they revised and learnt new signs of different pets e.g. dog, cat, rabbit, guineapig, turtle, snake, lizard, chicken, bird, horse. It has been lovely seeing how enthusiastic they have been when signing in Auslan.

Level 1

We have started our Nature unit Family unit where students have been practicing signing different places where they could go on a holiday e.g. mountain, river, beach, forest. They also learnt other nature signs e.g. sun, cloud. They have practised these words as a whole group and then had conversations with peers using Auslan grammar e.g.  Q. Your favourite holiday where? A. My favourite holiday mountains. Students embraced the challenge of doing this in silence.

Level 2

Level 2 students built on their learning in the Nature and Family unit by revising Auslan signs for holiday destinations such as mountain, river, beach and forest, along with weather and nature signs like sun and cloud. They practised asking and answering questions using Auslan grammar, then extended their conversations by giving reasons for their preferences and describing activities they enjoy at their chosen location. Students showed growing confidence communicating in silence and using expressive signing with their peers.
