Grade 1 /2 News

Enjoying the Term 2 with Specialists!

In this term, students have Music, PE, Science and Art once a week.

In Music, students have completed a listening unit focusing on the song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from the musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’. They have listened to the original 1939 version and two differing cover versions recorded more recently. Students discussed their likes and preferences from the various versions, identified key instruments used and emotions that they felt upon listening.

We have continued to work on music literacy skills with students practicing reading and clapping rhythms as well as writing and composing short rhythms.

Following body percussion patterns with graphic symbols representing a clap, knee pat, stamp and click to pop songs has also developed co-ordination. Moving the body in different ways to music helps develop timing and a sense of beat and reinforcing rhythmic pattern.

Throughout Term Two, Physical Education classes for Grade One and Two students, has focused on the development of basic and complex motor skills through active play and minor games. Students have investigated and applied simple movement patterns whilst playing games of follow the leader, copycat and pattern relay races with an empathise on following the rules. In the second half of the Term, Grade One and Two students will practise the fundamental motor skills of the throw, catch and two-handed strike. Students will practise these skills with an emphasis on accuracy, teamwork and enjoyment. As part of our Health unit this term the students have looked at respectful relationships. We have compared ourselves with our classmates and found our similarities and differences and discussed how these differences make us unique. Students have also explored recognising our emotions and taking steps to manage these emotions when they are heightened.

This term in science, students have been learning about biodiversity and birds.

They have identified different ecosystems around our school grounds and described the features of each ecosystem.

Students used binoculars to look for birds around our school and recorded their sightings in a table.

They learnt about bird beak and feet adaptations and the life cycle of birds.

Students also learnt about bird’s body parts and how to identify the different types of feathers found on a bird’s body.

During Term Two in Visual Arts students learnt about how science, music and art can cross over. Students explored how different materials can be used to make different sounds and act as musical instruments. Students all had the opportunity to make and decorate a spin drum. Next students listened to the story Maccas Makeover by the Australian author and illustrator Matt Cosgrove. They used crayons and textas to give their own “Macca” a makeover. These art pieces will be on display at the Art Show later in the year.

National Reconciliation Week

In LC1 the Grade 1 and 2 students learnt about National Reconciliation Week. They created a hand art piece, with their ideas of friendship and kindness drawn and written on the palms.

The students were very proud of their work and it has been dispalydisplayeded for all to see.
