Clarity Before Investing in a Diagnosis or Assessment

Taking the First STEP (Screening, Tools, Evaluation, & Planning)

A program developed for adults and children

Before You Commit to a Diagnosis, Take the First STEP Towards Clarity: When your child is struggling, understanding why can be confusing. ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression and learning differences can overlap, mask one another and be missed when assessed in isolation.

The First STEP program combines formal screening tools across these areas with a comprehensive developmental history and review to build a clearer picture of your child’s unique developmental, behavioural and emotional needs.

Gain clarity, practical strategies and individually tailored support to help your child thrive in every area of life – from feeling understood and supported at home with family, to learning confidently in the classroom with teachers and building positive connections with peers in the playground. With informed guidance on whether a full diagnostic assessment is necessary, you can feel confident before committing to the significant financial investment that may only examine one piece of the puzzle.

Your Child Comes First: Your child’s direct involvement is only needed when their perspective provides valuable additional information, and is limited to a simple self-report questionnaire that can be completed in the comfort of your own home. Otherwise, your child does not need to participate directly. This gentle, considered approach helps protect children from feeling tested or believing something is wrong with them, while allowing us to better understand their unique needs.

First STEP may help families to:

  • Explore areas of concern, including attention, social communication, learning, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
  • Consider appropriate next steps, including whether further assessment, additional support or practical strategies may be helpful.
  • Make informed decisions about potential pathways for understanding and supporting their child’s needs.

Every child’s circumstances are unique, and gaining clarity through screening provides a broader understanding of a child’s development and wellbeing. The findings may help inform decisions about what to explore next.

The aim is to support informed decision-making, with further assessment and intervention considered where appropriate. The First STEP program is available to children and adults.

Please note: First STEP is a screening assessment and clinical review. It does not provide, confirm or rule out a diagnosis. Depending on the findings, further assessment, support or referral may be recommended.
