From the Principal
Mr Jon Franzin
Dear Parents/Carer, Students and Friends of St Virgil’s,
End of Year Awards Assembly
Yesterday we acknowledged and celebrated those students who gained awards for effort and achievement in their elective studies as well as acknowledged those young men for their sporting endeavours. Creating a culture where boys strive to do their best is one of our goals at St Virgil’s, and the extensive number of boys who have set goals and made good progress towards meeting them – some making great progress – is testimony to the development of that culture. God has given all the boys talents, in various ways, and we encourage them to make the most of them. Congratulations to those who received an award and I encourage those boys who just missed out to continue to strive for success in the future.
It was also an opportunity to formally acknowledge our Year 10 students who will shortly commence examinations and move towards the end of the year. For some students this will be their final days at St Virgil’s College as they will be leaving to attend other College’s across Hobart. As such, we wish them all the very best and all the success in the coming years. For those students remaining with us and will continue their journey at St Virgil’s College we are excited about supporting and watching these young men continue to grow and develop and reach their God given potential.

Remembrance Day Service
This morning the College stopped to mark Remembrance Day, as a remembrance and commemoration of those who died in war – with the origin being those who died in World War I; Australians who died in the service of their country but remembering all who have died in war. And for some at St Virgil’s College – a remembrance of fathers, uncles and other relatives who have died and the consequences and memories of that being something many carry with them every day. The playing of the Last Post and the brevity of the phrases ‘We will remember them’ and ‘Lest we forget’, serving to highlight the importance of the real meaning of this occasion for us. I thank students for their reverence throughout and those who played a key role in today’s service it is greatly appreciated.

Vale John Francis Mazengarb
The College community keeps the Mazengarb family in our thoughts and prayers with the recent passing of John Mazengarb (SVC 1948-54). In particular, we pray for Andrew Mazengarb (SVC 1976-83) – St Virgil’s College Advisory Council Chair, Sandra Mazengarb – Director of Early Years, Sarah Mazengarb – Learning Support Officer and David Mazengarb (SVC 1953-59) – Chair of the Old Virgilian Association during this difficult time.
May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone,
May you always rememberwhen the shadows fall,
You do not walk alone.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
Best wishes for the week ahead.
