What we have been up to:

Congratulations families of 1/2A, we were the winners of the Attendance Cup this week! This win really belongs to you all because you are the ones that get the students to school each day on time.

It really does make a difference to your child’s learning experience, outcomes and well-being. So, congratulations again!

Over the last two weeks, Year 1/2A have been continuing to immerse themselves in the drama of Thistle Mountain. Students have worked with a giant-ologist to come up with their unique way to catch the giant, (see pictures). They all agreed they wanted to talk to the giant and come up with strategies to help solve the problem of his tantrums. It has been wonderful to see how into the drama the students have got and to hear all their caring, thoughtful solutions.

Maths:

Children have continued to explore the connection between different number patterns, (skip counting). They have been identifying which numbers belong to many different counting patterns (e.g. have many factors) while other numbers belong to very few number patterns (e.g. prime numbers).

Literacy:

As part of our phonics program, classes have continued to learn Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.1 sounds. These sounds include: –y as in sillyigh as in night, ie as in pieea as in meat, -y as in fly, and oa as in float

We have begun introducing the writer’s process. At Thornbury Primary School we practise the Writer’s Workshop model. We have begun this process by learning to unpack seeds by using our new sentence construction skills and developing our ideas into a plan and a draft. This will lead into revising, editing, and publishing.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

  • Students will start to unpack place value by ordering and representing bigger numbers (to at least 1000). They start applying their knowledge of place value to partition, rearrange and rename two- and three-digit numbers, and regroup these to assist in calculations.

  • Students will finish off Little Learners Love Literacy  Stage 7.1 sounds. To reinforce their learning, students could be practising reading at home with their take home readers. Students who are reading other books should also be encouraged to record this reading in their reading diary.
