Welcome to Term 3
Interhouse Athletics Carnival
Term 2 ended on a high as we came together on Monday of Week 10 to compete in the 2026 Interhouse Athletics Carnival at Barlow Park. With picturesque conditions and a first-class facility, our students enjoyed a wonderful day of competition on the track and in the field.
Students competed for individual accolades as well as House glory. It was a fantastic day full of interhouse rivalry, enthusiasm and amazing participation.
Congratulations to Heavey House, who showed that not only can they excel in the pool but also outperform their rivals in track and field, finishing as House Champions for 2026. Cahill House followed closely in second place, with Murray House in third and Hutchinson House in fourth.
A huge congratulations to all our individual Age Champions. Your efforts across the day were outstanding, and we are all proud of your achievements. A full list of Age Champions is available below.
The success of each carnival comes down to the attitude and participation of our students, and it is always fantastic to see so many students taking the opportunity to participate in these events. Thank you to each and every student who participated, cheered and supported their peers throughout all three of our House Competitions in 2026.
QISSN & CONFRO
While our school community enjoyed a two-week break, our Senior Netball Team and Senior Rugby League Team travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball Carnival (QISSN) and the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League Carnival (CONFRO) during the first week of the school holidays.
Both teams represented our College with determination, pride and commitment in their respective state-wide competitions.
QISSN
Our QISSN team faced some very strong competition; however, their determination and perseverance ensured they remained competitive throughout the carnival, finishing sixth in their division.
Congratulations to the following students: Charlie A, Bella B, Eloise D, Tayla E, Lilee G, Jemma M, Mikayla R, Charlotte R, Anna R and Darna Z.
A huge congratulations to Darna Z, who was named St Mary’s MVP and was also selected in the 2026 QISSN All Stars Team.
A sincere thank you to Mrs Tindall, Ms Hooper and Mrs Jonsen for their support, time and dedication in ensuring our girls were provided with this wonderful opportunity.
CONFRO
Our CONFRO team looked a little different this year, with the team made up of a combination of students from across the Cairns Diocese. We were incredibly proud to have eight outstanding young men from St Mary’s Catholic College step up and help lead the team.
The team progressed through the rounds undefeated and continued this strong form through to the Grand Final, where they were defeated in a tough match against Good Counsel College, Innisfail. Our boys played outstandingly throughout the carnival, demonstrating teamwork, grit and determination in every game.
The highlight of the carnival was the announcement that our team had been awarded the 2026 Spirit of Confraternity Trophy. The Spirit of CONFRO Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards in CONFRO history. It is not measured by trophies won, tries scored or matches won, but instead by the friendships formed, respect shown towards teammates and opponents, and the character displayed both on and off the field.
Our team was voted the best school out of 80 teams for their outstanding school pride, personal growth and resilience in overcoming the challenges faced in reaching the carnival.
Congratulations to the following students: Maxwell A, Eamon C, Richard D, Gus H, Sean K, Lucas M, Will P and Sam W.
I would also like to offer a huge thank you to Mr Slatcher, Mr Winter, Mr Tutoe, Ms Grady and Mrs Howard for their hard work and support of our team. Success does not happen by chance; it takes many hours of behind-the-scenes preparation, dedication and commitment. Without their support, our boys would not have been able to experience this incredible opportunity.
