Water is defined as an essential nutrient because it is required in amounts that exceed the body's ability to produce it. Mount Beauty Secondary College has a great water bubbler in the canteen space and another one next to the basketball court, available for refilling bottles with fresh cold water. Students are encouraged to bring in water bottles (not glass) for refilling. The Department of Education states, “Never supply high sugar content drinks such as energy drinks and flavoured mineral waters with high sugar content”. As such, our Canteen supplies only no, or low, sugar drinks.
What is an Energy Drink?
An energy drink is a popular non-alcoholic drink that includes caffeine and may contain other ingredients such as taurine, B vitamins, ginseng and guarana.
In Australia, a 250ml can of an energy drink contains 80mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to the amount of caffeine in a 250mL cup of instant coffee.
Who are Energy Drinks For?
Energy drinks are functional beverages designed for busy and active people who need a boost to get through their busy day.
Even though energy drinks contain only as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, energy drink manufactures do not recommend that energy drinks be consumed by children and include this message on their labels. Mental Health experts are calling on students to cut back on energy drinks, caffeine and sugar to help combat stress. The energy drinks industry supports a responsible commitment to the manufacture, marketing and consumption of its products.
These commitments include:
· Energy drinks not being available in primary or secondary schools.
· Marketing and advertising activities of energy drinks are not directed at children.
Students found with energy drinks at school will have the drink confiscated and not returned, following the Department’s expectations.
Any students seen drinking these drinks regularly will be provided with a catch up with the school nurse to have further health education sessions.
