Building Better Schools with SWPBS
Creating a positive and supportive school environment doesn’t happen by chance—it takes a clear, consistent approach. That’s where School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) comes in.
SWPBS is a framework used in schools to promote positive behaviour, improve student wellbeing, and create a safe, respectful learning environment. Rather than focusing only on punishing misbehaviour, SWPBS emphasizes teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours. This proactive approach helps students understand what is expected of them and supports them in meeting those expectations.
At the core of SWPBS are a few key principles: clearly defined behavioural expectations, consistent teaching of those expectations, and recognition of positive behaviour. Schools often use simple, memorable values—such as respect, responsibility, and safety—to guide student actions across all settings, from classrooms to playgrounds.
One of the biggest benefits of SWPBS is its whole-school approach. Staff work together to ensure consistency, which helps students feel secure and supported. Data is also used to track behaviour trends, allowing schools to respond effectively and provide targeted support where needed.
Importantly, SWPBS isn’t just about reducing negative behaviour—it’s about building a positive school culture. When students feel acknowledged and supported, they are more engaged, confident, and ready to learn.
As more schools adopt SWPBS, the results are clear: improved behaviour, stronger relationships, and a more positive environment for everyone. It’s a simple idea with a powerful impact—focus on the positive, and watch it grow.
In 2026, CSPS have revised many of the procedures and processes around SWPBS. This has included revising our Values - Respectful, Responsible, Resilient, Safe and refining the Behaviour Matrix in line with these values. These behaviours have been taught to all students and will be continually revisited in class and during "Setting the Climate" each term.
Stay tuned for a short video from Mrs Halket explaining the procedures and processes.
