Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding
Last weekend was another memorable one in boarding, highlighted by a thrilling win from our 1st XV Rugby team against our traditional rivals, St Laurence’s. Playing at home on McMahon Oval in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd created a fantastic atmosphere. The match itself was a close contest, and to come away with the win after facing some adversity made it all the more special. It was wonderful to hear many of the boys describe it as one of the best games they have watched.
A special congratulations to our boarders who took the field in the 1st XV – James Johnston, Kole Heikkinen, Henry Robinson, Joe Murphy, Phelix Lavea, Ewan Wood, Sam Kennedy and Josh Coote. We are very proud of their efforts. I would also like to recognise the outstanding support from our boarding community. The energy of “The Hive” continues to be driven by our boarders, who show up week after week to support their peers and help create such a strong sense of school spirit.
Beyond sport, the weekend offered a range of opportunities for boys to relax and engage. On Friday evening, a group enjoyed a trip to the cinema, while on Sunday many of our senior boys successfully completed their defensive driving course—an important and practical milestone. We also gathered as a community for Mass in the Chapel for Pentecost Sunday. It was a privilege to welcome Deacon Ivan Ortiz, who shared a thoughtful and engaging reflection after the Gospel.
This week, we are pleased to welcome Mrs Emelia McCarthy to the boarding team as our new After-Hours Receptionist. Emelia brings extensive experience in administration and logistics, along with nearly a decade of boarding experience at Somerville House and Loreto Normanhurst. This is a vital role within our boarding community, supporting families, students, and staff, and we are delighted to have Emelia join us.
We also share some significant staffing news. Mr David Finch, Boarding Leader of Hermitage Residence, will be concluding his time at Marist College Ashgrove at the end of this term, having accepted the position of Head of Boys Boarding at Westminster School in Adelaide. This is a wonderful opportunity for David and a well-deserved recognition of his leadership. Since joining us in late 2022, he has made a meaningful contribution to the lives of our boarders through his care, commitment, and presence. On behalf of our entire boarding community, I extend our sincere thanks and warmest congratulations. Recruitment for his replacement is now underway, and further updates will be shared in due course.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our boarding community.
