Over the past two weeks, students have shown an enormous amount of resilience while working through their Literacy and Numeracy assessments. All students tried their personal best and did not give up, even when faced with challenging questions. We are super proud of all students for trying so hard.

We absolutely loved Simultaneous Story Time on Wednesday. We listened to the live reading of Luna Roo and made cards with our Grade 5/6 friends.

In Literacy we have been learning about adding s or es to nouns to make them plural. We learnt there is a rule to help us.

We have also been learning about adding “ed” to show verbs in the past tense, such as the word play. We practised writing sentences using the word play. Students wrote: “I can play.” “I am playing.” and “Yesterday I played with my friend.”

We have been learning about compound words, such as raincoat, which is made up of the words rain and coat. We have also been working on identifying how many syllables are in words to help us spell and read longer words, such as banana – ba/na/na. In addition, we have been learning about adding ck at the end of words, such as duck, flick, back, neck, and clock.

For Show and Tell this week, we had a special visitor. Josh brought in his lizard! Everyone got to hold the lizard (if they wanted to), and we learnt interesting facts about lizards from Josh.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about length. Students have had lots of fun measuring themselves and items in the classroom using words such as shorter, longer, the longest, the shortest, and the same length. Here, students are measuring items using a piece of ribbon.

We learnt about Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day this week. All the students joined in with our Yellow Parade and donated a gold coin to help our Junior Red Cross raise funds for Children's Ground. This is  Children's Ground Vision:

  • First Nations people across Australia have self-determination and enjoy social, cultural, political and economic justice.
  • Our next generation of children know and celebrate their culture and identity, have freedom of choice and expression and can live with opportunity, peace, harmony and wellbeing.
  • Australians recognise our shared history and celebrate First Nations culture and strength.

Mrs Murphy - Grade 1/2 & Mrs Monson - Grade 1/2

Just a reminder that swimming starts next week. 💦💦💦. Students need to come to school in their bathers or swimmers. Please make sure to pack a towel, underwear, socks, a plastic bag or similar, which is also good for their wet clothes. Students are always hungry after swimming lessons, so you might like to put in some extra fruit and snacks on the days we are swimming.

Students who are not swimming will stay back and work with Mrs Murphy or Mrs Monsen. Mrs Murphy will go swimming on a Monday, and Mrs Monsen will go swimming on a Tuesday.

We have been learning all about Suffixes that finish in the -ed sound. Students have learnt that when we add -ed to a verb, it means the action has already happened.

e.g. Jump  / Jumped        Play / Played

We also have learnt that even though our words end in an -ed sound, it can give us the /t/ or /d/ sound at the end of the word.

e.g. Washed / Wash - t   and Cleaned / Clean - d

Maths ➕➖🟰

We have finished this week our unit on addition and subtraction. Students have learned lots of different strategies for addition and subtraction. It has been amazing to hear how students are using different language when working out their sums. For example, some students with subtraction have been saying we minus, we take away, we subtract, and they understand it all means the same thing.

Our next unit we are starting it Multiplication and Division. Watch this space....
