Staff Professional Learning – Metacognition

This week, our teachers participated in professional learning focused on Enabling Learning and Metacognition as part of our ongoing commitment to improving teaching and learning outcomes for all students.

Metacognition is often described as “thinking about thinking.” It involves helping students become more aware of how they learn, how they approach challenges, and the strategies they can use when learning becomes difficult. Research shows that when students develop strong metacognitive skills, they become more independent, resilient, and successful learners.

Throughout the session, staff explored practical ways to support students to:

  • plan and organise their learning,
  • monitor their understanding
  • reflect on their progress
  • develop persistence and problem-solving skills and
  • build confidence as learners.

As a school, we are committed to using evidence-based practices that support both academic growth and student wellbeing. We look forward to continuing this important work with students across all year levels.

Once Upon Whittlesea

During Weeks 9 and 10 of this term, our students will participate in Once Upon Whittlesea, a whole-school narrative writing unit designed to celebrate creativity, imagination, and student voice.

Across the school, students will engage in the writing process as they plan, draft, revise, and publish their own narrative pieces. Students will explore storytelling techniques, character development, descriptive language, and creative ideas while developing their confidence and enjoyment as writers.

As part of this exciting learning opportunity, students will be encouraged to create a published piece of writing that may later be exhibited at the Whittlesea Show later this year. This provides students with an authentic audience and an opportunity to showcase their writing beyond the classroom.

To celebrate the conclusion of the unit, families are warmly invited to attend our Once Upon Whittlesea Showcase and Open Classrooms on Wednesday, 24 June, 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm

This will provide families with the opportunity to visit classrooms, view student work, and celebrate our students' wonderful writing achievements. We look forward to sharing our students’ creativity and hard work with our school community.
