Students Explore Future Pathways at Deakin University

Students recently had the opportunity to participate in an immersive on-campus experience at Deakin University, providing valuable insights into higher education and future career pathways.

Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on learning activities, explored university learning spaces, and heard directly from current Deakin students through informative panel discussions. These experiences helped break down common myths surrounding university life and provided students with a realistic understanding of what higher education can offer.

Students participated in a variety of interactive workshops across a range of disciplines, including Engineering, Nursing and Midwifery, Creative Arts, Exercise Science, and Forensic Science. These sessions allowed students to explore areas of interest, gain practical insights into different professions, and learn about the study pathways that can lead to these careers.

The experience was a valuable opportunity for students to broaden their understanding of post-school options, ask questions, and begin considering the many pathways available to them after secondary school.

We thank Deakin University staff and student ambassadors for providing such an engaging and informative experience and for supporting our students as they explore their future education and career opportunities.

Year 10 Work Experience

Work Experience is an important and exciting part of the Year 10 program, and we are pleased to confirm that Work Experience Week will take place from Monday June 22nd to Friday June 26th.

Work experience is a valuable opportunity for students to explore potential career pathways, gain insight into the world of work, and build confidence and skills for the future. As such, participation in work experience is an expectation for all Year 10 students.

Why is Work Experience important?

Work experience offers many benefits, including:

• Helping students work out what industry is right for them – or what isn’t!
• Informing future subject selections and pathway choices
• Building confidence and real-world workplace skills
• Providing valuable industry contacts and networking opportunities
• Strengthening a student’s resume and future job applications

Steps to organise Work Experience

Students should begin preparing as soon as possible by following these steps:

• Think about what you might like to do and begin researching suitable industries or workplaces
• Contact employers (by phone, email, or in person) to ask about work experience opportunities
• Complete the Work Experience documentation (to be signed by the student, parent/guardian, and employer)
• Return completed forms to the Senior Subschool at least one week prior to the placement start date 

What if a student cannot find a placement?

Students who are unable to secure a placement will be required to complete a virtual work experience program during this week. Further details about this option will be provided closer to the date. 

Where possible, students are strongly encouraged to secure an onsite placement. Being physically in a workplace allows students to:

• Experience the day-to-day environment and workplace culture
• Build stronger connections with employers and staff
• Develop communication and interpersonal skills in a real setting

• Gain a more authentic understanding of the job and industry

   

Virtual work experience can still be valuable, however it does not fully replicate the hands-on experience and personal interactions of being in a real workplace.
