Why the Premiers’ Reading Challenge?

Reading is literally the gift that keeps giving. While you escape into another world, you are also expanding your vocabulary, strengthening memory, building focus, enhancing empathy and emotional intelligence, while relaxing (which in itself, has a number of benefits). What’s more, many studies have demonstrated the connection between reading and higher academic achievement and prosperous careers. Mullauna College has always acknowledged these benefits and aimed to promote them by incorporating the Wide Reading program in our curriculum. This ensures that every student from years 7-9 has a lesson once a fortnight, devoted to reading. As part of the Wide Reading program, we encourage every student to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. This requires a student to read 15 books between February and September of that year. 2025 was a fantastic year with 3 times the number of students completing the challenge compared to previous years. We intend to build on that success in 2026, as we know, a regular reading habit not only opens minds, but the road to success.
