Principal Team Report

May 2026

Dear Mullauna Community,

We have hit the halfway mark of the term – well done all! And what a beautifully sunny day to celebrate this milestone.

The reflection on Education Week by David Howes on the previous page prompted me to consider how we celebrate our school. Apart from our celebratory display in the foyer, our many highlights posted on Facebook (and now on Instragram as well), our biggest celebration of all things Mullauna was of course our Open Night, held three weeks ago as part of our publicity and the Year 6-7 enrolment program. Open Night allows us to showcase so many wonderful aspects of our school, the highlights being our students, staff and parents. We received so much positive feedback about the warmth of the reception received by the many visitors to our school from our many Mullauna community members present on the evening.

Added to this, during yesterdays’ tour for prospective families, a parent enquired what we were proudest of – always a tough question! My response was an attempt to be all-encompassing: the enrolment growth that we have experienced. It is the clearest indicator that the community is noticing and valuing the improvement work we are doing at Mullauna, and thanks to that growth, we can do even better work, thanks to a broadening and diversifying staff team providing more options for our students through new subjects and more opportunities.

Mullauna kids helping Mitcham kids

On Tuesday morning, fourteen fabulous MSC students accompanied Michael Bray and me to Mitcham PS for our first support session – we outnumbered the MPS students, a very pleasing outcome! We continue to receive expressions of interest, which is a great expression of the community focus of our students.

MSC Staff supporting the community

Belinda Dowel, one of our Food Technology Assistants, together with her family, will be attending the Shine a Light on Road Safety walk at Albert Park Lake in honour of her son Brandon, who died in a car crash in 2020.

The walk supports the Amber Community to Shine a Light on Road Safety for the month of May. You can help Belinda and her family to raise vital funds to support people impacted by road trauma, honour loved ones and advocate for road safety by donating at: https://getinvolved.ambercommunity.org.au/fundraisers/TeamBRANS137

STAGE 2 STEM CENTRE BUILDING UPDATES

Over the past few weeks, the site has been busy with activity. Crews have completed major excavation works and safely removed contaminated soil, helping prepare the area for the next stage of construction. Trenching for underground services has also finished, setting up important connections for the new building.

Crews have poured the concrete slab, forming the foundation. Structural columns will be set up, and precast concrete walls will be delivered next week via crane and put into place. Thank you again for your patience and support as we move through construction. The end result will have such a positive impact on our school.

If you have any questions about the Stage 2 works, you can contact the VSBA by phone at 1800 896 950, email vsba@education.vic.gov.au or visit their website: www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au

Year 9 and 10 Family Subject Expo and Pathways evening – 6pm Thursday 18th June (Week 9, Term 2)

All current Year 9 and 10 students will receive a flyer about this evening, where each faculty will present 2027 subject offerings and key college leaders will present course selection advice (especially with regard to the more complex English, Maths and Science pathways).

All current Year 9 and 10 students and their parents are required to attend to ensure they fully understand the process, requirements and pathway implications.

Each year level will attend both an information session in the PAC and also the subject expo with Heads of Faculty in F Wing.

The evening commences at 6pm and should conclude around 8pm at the latest (depending on how many questions you have!).

All Year 9 and 10 students and their parents/carers should be at the college for a 6pm start - please allow ample time to find parking in neighbouring streets as there will be NO on-site parking.

At 6pm:

  • All Year 9 families should be in the PAC for the Year 10 2027 Subject Selection Presentation.
  • All Year 10 families should be at the Future Options and Faculty Expo in the F Wing.

Around 6.45pm, the two groups will swap over, with:

  • Year 9s heading to the F Wing to speak to faculty staff about subjects,
  • and the Year 10 Families heading to the PAC for the 2027 Year 11 VCE and VCE VM Subject Selection Presentation (including VET and SBAT options).

Year 11 and 12 students and families are encouraged to attend the Expo in F Wing also, to speak to the range of tertiary institutions present: Deakin, Monash, Swinburne, La Trobe, ACU, Box Hill Institute and Holmesglen.

Mullauna College funding – the Building Fund is tax deductible!

As the financial year slowly draws to a close, I will take this opportunity to remind families that a great way to support the college is to make a donation to the tax-deductible Building Fund. This provides extra resources for maintenance of our buildings and facilities, and to replace old or add new fittings.

My thanks to the many families that have supported us already by making the voluntary Family Contribution. These contributions are critical to the everyday running of the school and the programs we can offer our students. For example, it’s this additional funding that allows us to run the many smaller classes at VCE (especially in Year 12) to keep students’ pathways options open.

If you are unable to make the full contribution, please consider some part-payments.

Thanks from the P&CA

Our thanks for the many donations for the hamper – and I’m sure it’s not too late to make more …
