Spotlight on learning in 6L

What’s been happening in 6L?
Science - Electrical Circuits
Last term we began learning about light, shadows, energy and electrical circuits. Weeks 1 & 2 of this term have completed our learning. The Year 6 students were split into small groups and experimented with different materials to find out which act as conductors and which are insulators. To do this each group had to construct an electrical circuit, including a battery pack, wires and a globe. Students opened the circuit and replaced the empty space with different materials. If the globe lit up the material could be classified as a conductor, if it didn’t it acted as an insulator. Students used tier 2 vocabulary they had learnt, such as insulator, conductor, transfer, circuit, receiver to discuss their findings.
Writing - R.A.C.E. Strategy
In order to demonstrate in-depth comprehension of topics and to give their non-fiction writing more detail the Year 6 students have been practicing using the R.A.C.E. strategy to answer questions about non-fiction reading passages.
The R.A.C.E. strategy stands for:
As a class we constructed an answer to a question using the R.A.C.E. strategy and then students worked in small, collaborative groups to write their own answer to a question. Each group was given a different reading passage and associated question. Each member of the group had to write a different step of the R.A.C.E. strategy, e.g. one student restated the question, whilst another student cited the text for evidence. This supported the students’ overall understanding of the concept and provided them with confidence before independently working on this strategy.
