F/1
Welcome to Term 3!
I hope that everyone had an opportunity to rest and relax (at least a little) over the holidays, with a smooth return to another term of learning in the F/1 room.
We have had an exciting beginning to the term, starting with our Day of Joy on Tuesday. As a school, we were all lucky enough to begin our day with a bonfire and marshmallows. The children also harvested and cooked their first food in the Garden Kitchen space with Clare and Gemma.
LITERACY
Our Reading focus for the beginning of the term will be Jeannie Baker's Where the Forest meets the Sea. We will work together to identify language, text features and themes within the story, that we can apply to our own work in Literacy. In Writing, we will learn about persuasive texts, what they are, key language features (e.g., conjunctions - because, but, so) and how we can use our opinions and words to influence or impact others.
To support our learning in Literacy, please ensure that your child has an opportunity to share their at-home-readers with you each night, 10 minutes of reading with you will make all the difference to their learning.
Our first at-home-readers for this term will be sent home Monday of week 2 (20.07.2026). All readers should be returned to school on a Friday morning.
NUMERACY
Our first focus for Maths will be measurement - length, mass and capacity. The children will explore each type of measurement for a week, and focus on what each topic of measurement is (e.g., what is length?), how we can measure it, and how we can measure different things in different ways. Our measurement units are always very hands on in F/1, so the children should have lots to tell you!
To support our learning in Numeracy, discussing measurements, especially size or scale, comparatively will provide your child an opportunity to practise the skills they are learning at school in an applied or 'real world' setting. Activities like cooking are also excellent practise for measurement too!
INQUIRY & RELIGION
Our Inquiry and RE units this term will be closely linked, and provide a chance for the children to explore their's and other's gifts and talents. We have already begun to discuss the differences and similarities of these concepts, and how our individual gifts and/or talents can be used to support ourselves, and those around us.
DISCOVERY
To deepen our understanding across all our areas of learning, the children will begin to explore Discovery Spaces during Inquiry and RE sessions. These spaces are purposefully designed to link directly to key curriculum areas (including Literacy and Numeracy) and provide the children an opprotunity to learn in a range of languages.
Our first experiences include:
- Language of Construction - LEGO
- Language of Dramatic Play - Toy Shop
- Language of Collage - Wire and beads
- Language of Mark Making - Writing (narrative)
Every few weeks, these spaces will change. New directions will be influenced by the learning across key curriculum areas, as well as the children's interests.
ASSEMBLY
At 9.00am, on Monday 20 July, the F/1 class will be hosting our first Assembly of Term 3. Everyone is warmly invited to attend!
Anything that your child might read, or share at our Assembly will be sent home with them on Friday afternoon - any practise over the weekend that you could support would be wonderful.
