Year 11 WA School's Constitutional Convention

On Thursday, the Year 11 Politics and Law students participated in the Western Australian School’s Constitutional Convention, which was held at The Constitutional Centre of Western Australia in West Perth.

Joining with over 150 students from all around the state, students heard to a keynote address from the Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Mr Chris Dawson AC KPM, who spoke about the need for securing confidence in our democratic institutions in times when they are being called into question by extremism. His talk was engaging and gave all the students many issues to consider as they move towards adulthood.

This address was followed by a personalised recorded message from the Governor-General, Her Excellency  the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, who spoke about the day to day role that she plays in our political system. Other presenters on the day included Professor Martin Drum Executive Dean for the Faculty of Arts, Science, Law and Business at Notre Dame University, Professor Alan Fenna from the John Curtin Institute for Public Policy and constitutional lawyer Professor Emerita Anne Twomey.

The main issue discussed at the convention was how we should keep the Governor-General accountable. The standard of participation from the Trinity College students at the convention was outstanding and they are to be congratulated on their participation.
