Year 10 Students Build Skills in Bricklaying & Carpentry
Through CTF Try-a-Trade Program
This week, a group of enthusiastic Year 10 students took part in the Construction Training Fund (CTF) Try-a-Trade program, hosted by Skill Hire, with a focus on Bricklaying and Carpentry. The program gave students the unique opportunity to step outside of the classroom and immerse themselves in the hands-on experience of the construction industry.
Throughout the program, students developed a wide range of technical skills. In bricklaying, they learned how to correctly mix mortar, measure, and cut bricks, and apply techniques to ensure precision in their work. The carpentry component introduced them to safe tool handling, accurate measuring, cutting, and assembling timber, and the importance of following detailed plans to achieve a quality finish. For many, it was their first time working with industry-standard tools and materials, which provided a valuable introduction to potential career pathways.
Equally important were the non-cognitive skills the students gained. The program required them to work both independently and collaboratively, building confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills as they encountered challenges. Communication and teamwork were central to completing tasks effectively, while persistence and attention to detail proved crucial in achieving high standards of workmanship. Students also demonstrated initiative and adaptability, qualities highly valued in the workplace.
This week’s experience highlighted the strong link between classroom learning and practical application, giving students insight into the rewarding possibilities within the building and construction sector. The CTF Try-a-Trade program not only provided an opportunity to develop skills but also encouraged students to reflect on their future career interests and pathways.
The College congratulates all participating students on their efforts and thanks Skill Hire and the Construction Training Fund for their support in delivering this valuable program.

The Mathematical Association of WA Problem Solving Program
Applications for the 2026 Mathematics Association of Western Australia (MAWA) Problem Solving Program is now open. The Problem Solving Program (PSP), developed in 1992 by Dr Nathan Hoffman, continues to provide rich learning opportunities for able mathematics students. Each year, over 400 students (aged 10–15) take part in PSP.
The program aims to:
develop mathematical problem-solving skills;
strengthen logical and effective presentation of solutions; and
enrich students’ mathematical knowledge.
Designed for students with a passion for mathematics and persistence for challenge, PSP runs in two stages:
Challenge Stage (Semester 1)
Enrichment Stage (Semester 2) – in partnership with Maths for Young Australians (Australian Maths Trust).
Applications Close: 4.00pm, Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
