Reading Olympics 2026

The 2026 Reading Olympics are complete! Ansett took out the trophy this year, dominating the medal count. While taking nothing away from those in Jacka who put in their best effort, Ansett’s participation rate meant that, this year, the competition was not very close. Jacka’s lone gold medal came from Elliot Cook, who did a wonderful job to win the junior Reading Triathlon. This year’s grand champions were: 

Primary

Bronze: Hamish Kerr (ANSETT) 

Silver: Lucas George (ANSETT) 

Gold: Ryder Brodie (ANSETT) with 3 gold medals!

Secondary

Bronze: Dakota Martin (ANSETT) 

Silver: Aliana Zeini (ANSETT) 

Gold: Cheyenne Johnson (ANSETT) 

Well done to everyone! And a reminder to medal winners to come and collect their prizes.

Reading Tip of the Week:

Read the signs

On any drive or walk, read the signs you pass out loud — road signs, shop names, number plates, signs on gates, labels on the shopping. Pick one and ask: "Why is it written that way?" Why SLOW and not "please reduce speed"? Why is the fish and chip shop called that? Younger kids can just hunt for letters or words they know. Older ones can argue about whether the sign does its job.

Is that a good deal?

At the supermarket, hand over two versions of the same thing (eg. the big packet and the small one or the brand and the no-name). Ask: "Which is better value, and how do you know?" Use the unit price on the shelf ticket to check. Then ask the harder question: is the cheaper one actually the better buy for us? Sometimes the answer is no, and that's worth talking about too.

Active Learning 

Our school is undertaking a push to ensure our students are active learners. The attached active learner matrix is present in all classrooms. In Huddle this week, most students will be doing an activity that focuses on one of the behaviours that drives active learning. We hope that all students will come to understand and embrace what it means to be an active learner. 

Homework Club

Homework Club runs at lunchtime on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students are encouraged to come along and get their homework completed, catch up on missed work, or get some help. There’s teacher support in a quiet space and is open to all secondary students.
