Year 5/6 Learning Reflection

This week during Systemic Knowledge, the Grade 6 students have started a new Technology unit entitled, Food Technology and Diet design.  The students will be learning about foods and ingredients that have physical, chemical, and nutritional properties that influence how they behave during preparation, cooking, storage, and preservation. 

To start with, they have been finding out about food preferences, dietary requirements, cultural preferences, and other relevant informtion by surveying their classmates. The end product will be a nutrient filled, healthy mug muffin which they will be cooking at school, after they have created their own recipe, packaging and a catchy advertising jingle. 

Grade 5 have been learning about all about cells (structure, function, types) and ecosystems/habitats (types, conditions, animal, plants, human interactions, changes).

They created a poster to display their understanding of living things, including cell types  and levels of organisation from cells to systems and organisms.

This week is Science Week. This year’s theme is 'Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all'. Grade 6 students have been learning about 'leaving a regeneration legacy.' This could be a special flowering or structural environmental addition to our school grounds and gardens, that will last for years and support and enhance the local flora and fauna. 

The students went for a walk around the grounds to remind themselves of what had changed over the years that they have been at Sunny Heights. They then brainstormed, planned in groups and created their own new additions. They then pitched their proposals. 

Unfortunately, Grade 5's seed planting had to be postponed due to the bad weather. This will happen at another time.

During Applied Literacy, Grade 6 have begun a new serial read titled Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow.

6B have been reflecting during their 'Do Now' and summarising what they have read so far in paragraphs, using SPO - single paragraph outlines. 

And Grade 5s have been publishing their narratives based on their serial read 'The Grandest Bookshop in the world.'

Lastly, next week is another exciting week at Sunny Heights - Book Week!  The students get to dress up as their favourite book character and take part in school book parade on Tuesday morning, as well as taking part in other activities.

5A have been busy preparing their class door with a theme about a book they have read and getting some inspiration by reading from a variety of different authors. Come and have a look!
