Year 5/6

History - This term, our Year 5/6 students are investigating the rich linguistic landscape of First Nations communities, guided by the central enquiry question: What makes Aboriginal Languages diverse across Australia?

This unit builds directly on our previous studies of Australian colonies. Over the past fortnight, students explored how a single historical event can be interpreted through multiple perspectives, grounding this concept in the colonisation of our local area. Working in pairs, students researched the cultural significance of Tumbarumba to First Nations Peoples, contrasting this with the specific natural resources that attracted European settlers to establish a permanent colony.

To conclude the unit, students will participate in a Learning Showcase. This event provides an opportunity for students to apply their insights, demonstrate how the past influences the present, and explore their own roles in keeping Aboriginal languages strong for the future.

 HS3-ACH-01- describes Aboriginal Knowledges and Practices that care for Country and the importance of Aboriginal Languages revival.

HS3-HIS-01 - examines and describes the development of Australian colonies and Australia as a nation, using sources as evidence.

 HS3-CWT-01- creates written texts to communicate ideas and understanding about people, places and events of the past and the present 

Maths - Ahead of our participation in the Todd Woodbridge Cup in Wagga Wagga, students engaged in a practical, sports-integrated mathematics lesson.

Using the upcoming tennis tournament as a real-world context, students applied their understanding of surface area. They used partitioning strategies to efficiently calculate the surface area of an International Tennis Court, a Recreational Tennis Court, and the specific 1/4-size court dimensions used for their tournament matches. Following these calculations, the class discussed how reduced playing areas impact spatial court positioning, player movement, and shot control.
