Geography – Participating as an Active Citizen

In Geography this term, students are learning about what it means to be an active citizen and how people can participate positively in their community and wider society. We have been discussing ways people contribute, such as volunteering, following rules, helping others, respecting different perspectives, and developing an understanding of other people’s cultures and traditions.

Students are exploring real organisations that respond to needs within Australian communities. These include the Country Women’s Association of NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, Royal Flying Doctor Service NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW. Through these examples, students are considering why these organisations exist, what community needs they address, and how volunteers and other members contribute to society.

As part of their learning, students will be challenged to think like active citizens themselves: Can they identify a need in their community or society and design an organisation that could help? They will consider who their organisation would support, what problem it would address and what actions its members could take to make a positive difference.
