Prep

Our Preps have been busy learning that sentences have a who (noun) and a do (verb), and that we can make our sentences more interesting by adding a where.

Pevan and Sarah have also been helping us remember all the important things our sentences need: they must make sense, begin with a capital letter, have finger spaces and finish with punctuation.

We are so proud of the writing our Preps are producing each week and the way they have embraced the challenge of writing on dotted thirds. There is certainly a lot to remember, but our Preps are doing a wonderful job!

The Preps were fortunate to have a visit from the Police as part of their ‘Community’ unit of learning. Special thanks to parents in the school community, Asher and Monique, who gave their time generously to plan some exciting activities for the Prep students. We are sure it will be remembered for many years to come.

Grades 1& 2

Reading buddies

This term, students in Grades 1 and 2 have been grateful for the opportunity to participate in buddy reading with students from Grades 5 and 6. We would like to thank our wonderful senior students and their teachers for taking the time each week to sit with our younger students, listen to them read, and encourage them as they develop their reading skills.

Buddy reading has been a wonderful opportunity for students to practise reading in a relaxed and supportive environment. Our younger students have benefited from having an older student model fluent reading, listen patiently, and provide encouragement and positive feedback. These regular opportunities have helped build their confidence, develop their fluency, and foster a greater enjoyment of reading.

For our Grade 5 and 6 students, buddy reading has also provided valuable opportunities to develop leadership, communication and mentoring skills. They have learnt the importance of being patient, supportive and encouraging while helping their younger buddies.

Most importantly, it has been lovely to see the genuine relationships that have developed between the reading buddies. The students have enjoyed spending time together, sharing books, celebrating successes and simply enjoying one another’s company while practising the important skill of reading. It has been a wonderful reminder that reading can be both a valuable learning experience and a joyful opportunity to connect with others.

*They helped me sound out the words.

*They showed me how to go back and reread when I got a word wrong.

Grades 3&4

Eureka Skydeck Excursion

Our Grade 3 and 4 students had an exciting day out at the Eureka Skydeck! Students enjoyed taking in the breathtaking views of Melbourne from the 88th floor while learning more about our city and its landmarks. It was wonderful to see students challenging themselves, sharing their observations and enjoying this memorable experience together. A fantastic day was had by all!

Grades 5 & 6

Last week we set off on an adventure to the city to explore the Melbourne Immigration Museum and its surrounds. Our students spent the day participating in a variety of historical experiences, including an education session where they worked together as research teams to uncover the mysteries of real migration stories. 

We were able to freely explore the Immigration Museum and learn about the significance of its location and the role it played in the beginning of so many immigration journeys, as well as examine a variety of personal belongings that were part of these stories. 

Exploring history is hungry work though, so our students set off to Melbourne Central on foot where they were able to treat themselves to a variety of fast (and not so fast) food options for lunch. Even with all the novelty and excitement, our 5/6 students represented Kalinda exceptionally well throughout the entire day, and even showed incredible resilience when faced with some unexpected bus trouble on our return journey to school!

Our Aussie Dash competition is well and truly heating up! Students have been working hard to earn kilometres for our classes, and we are thrilled to report that 5/6M is currently sitting in the lead. Go team!

This week some of our students also took part in Hoop Time, and what a fantastic day it was! Students had an absolute blast out on the court, showing off some impressive skills and giving it their all. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to represent our school, work together as a team, and most importantly, have a great time doing it. We are very proud of the sportsmanship and spirit shown by all involved. Well done!

Finally, we are so excited to see everyone's costumes for Book Week. We cannot wait to see the incredible, creative, and colourful characters that walk through our classroom door!
