Year 8 News

Welcome everyone back for Term 2! It's been a busy start with school sports, and new topics sparking curiosity in the classroom. Students have shown great enthusiasm and teamwork across all areas.
This week the Year 8 students will undertake the Attitudes to School Survey and many of the students have also kicked off the term by participating in interschool AFL, providing a great opportunity to build teamwork, stay active, and represent our school with pride.
We’re looking forward to another great term of learning, growth, and memorable experiences.
Attendance
As we move into the cooler months, we understand that coughs, colds, and seasonal illnesses become more common. It is important that students look after themselves by getting enough sleep, staying active, eating well, and taking time to recover when unwell. While regular attendance is incredibly important for student learning, wellbeing, and maintaining positive routines, we also encourage families to keep students’ home when they are genuinely unwell to help prevent the spread of illness across the school community. If your child is absent from school, we kindly ask parents and carers to submit an attendance note through Compass or contact the school via the attendance hotline as soon as possible.
KPAs
Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPAs) is Kurnai College’s positive reinforcement program, recognising and rewarding students who consistently demonstrate our core pillars of work ethic, engagement, relationships, and excellence. We would like to acknowledge the outstanding start students have continued to make in their learning this year. Celebrating student success is an important part of our school culture, whether it be recognising growth in learning and behaviour, consistent effort, or outstanding academic achievement. The positive choices our students make each day contribute greatly to the strength of our learning community, and we encourage families to continue these valuable conversations at home.
Around the Classrooms
Relationships & Resilience
This term students are focusing on empathy and regulation. We're practicing skills like the 5 Finger Breathing and exploring topics such as how we connect with people in different settings, the benefits of empathy, and what motivates us.
English
In English students will be exploring Paul Jenning's short story, 'A Dozen Bloomin' Roses'. We've looked at the use of colloquialisms and we'll explore topics including relationships between flawed characters, and bullying.
Maths
In Mathematics, Year 8 students are focusing on developing their understanding of algebra and equations, including identifying patterns, using variables, and solving mathematical problems using algebraic thinking.
Humanities
Students are focusing on Economics this term. We've been looking at different types of income, budgeting, and setting financial goals.
Science
The focus this term is on cells and body systems, exploring how living organisms function and how different systems within the human body work together to maintain health and wellbeing.
