Student Corner

At Heathmont College, chickens are running amok! Three cheeky chooks have been taken care of by Scarlet Seaye (aka the Guardian of the Chooks) behind the art rooms. Their names are Bean, Ninja Nugget, and Zinger, and they’re here to not only provide the Food Tech rooms with eggs but also teach students responsibility skills that they will definitely need.
The chicken’s original guardian was Nina Ling, but unfortunately she and Francis have left the school. Now, one of our own year 8 students has risen to the occasion. Enter, Scarlet.
I’ve interviewed Scarlet to ask more about the chickens so we can get to know our chooks better!
Q1: What is your relationship with the chickens? Do they see you as a mother or guardian?
They think of me as a guardian. They follow me around when I’m in the pen. I clean their cage frequently.
Q2: Can you tell the chickens apart? How so?
Yeah, I can tell them apart – the colours and size of them differ. Zinger’s biggest and darkest, and the other chickens are smaller. Ninja Nugget is skinnier and lighter in weight than Bean.
Q3: How would you describe the personalities of each chicken? Are they different in any way? How so?
Bean is very skittish. Zinger loves going above the wall, but she’s afraid of heights when getting down.
