Tongan Language Week

Tongan Language Week (Uike Kātoanga'i 'o e Lea Faka-Tonga) 16-22 August

2026 Theme: "Ko 'etau hiva, ko e fe'unu mahu'inga ia ki he mo'ui 'a e Tonga" — Our music is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.

This year, with the help of Mrs Telefoni, we celebrated Tongan Language Week, by making kahoa pepa (crepe paper leis). Students had the opportunity to take their leis home and to also experience some cultural food of rice and chicken chop suey. 

Language and culture are an important part of who we are. They connect us to our families, our history, our communities and the generations that came before us. Language is more than just communicating, it is a way of connecting with our identity, culture and sense of belonging.

At school, we encourage our students to embrace, celebrate and be proud of their culture and language. Whether you speak your language every day, understand only a few words, or have lost some of your language over time, it is never too late to reconnect. Language is something valuable that should be celebrated, not hidden.

Your culture is your story. Your language is part of your voice. Be proud of who you are and never be afraid to celebrate where you come from.
