We love Book Week!
This week we celebrated Book Week with great enthusiasm and excitement, embracing the theme of a "Symphony of Stories." Today we held the much-loved annual Book Week parade, where students dressed up as their favourite book characters in creative costumes and told us about the book their character was inspired by. We're so lucky at this school that all of the staff and students participate. I think it says a lot about the connectedness of our school community that all of our students feel safe and supported to take part. How fitting for our 'community-minded' theme this term!
Following the parade, students participated in cross-age group activities based on one of the featured Book Week books. It was heartwarming to see the collaboration and interactions between students of all ages, sharing their love of stories and further fostering a whole-school culture which celebrates reading.
Our Book Week is organised and coordinated by Corinne Pepper, our wonderful SSO who manages the library. In a time when many schools are shutting down their libraries, I am so pleased that we have such a vibrant and welcoming space where children can explore and discover the kinds of books that mean so much to them.
Here is what Corinne has to say about reading and Book Week:
It's so important for children to enjoy books. It brings them different perspectives, teaches them social norms of how others interact, takes them to other places, and calms the mind. I get such pleasure from seeing the students sitting and reading and getting lost in a book.
Book Week is important to me because it's a special time to celebrate books and reading! I experience joy seeing the costumes come together and seeing them participate in the scavenger hunt, quizzes and competitions at different levels, all based on books.
The library feels like my happy place, and I want to make this a happy place for all of the students as well!
We hope you enjoy these photos of Book Week. All of the students did so well with their costumes, and our Year 6 SRC executive students had the difficult job of choosing 2 standouts per class for awards. Congratulations to our winners, pictured below:
