WHAT IS EXPLICIT TEACHING?

At our school, we use explicit teaching to help students learn new skills and knowledge effectively. Research shows that this approach leads to strong learning outcomes for most students.

Explicit teaching means teachers clearly explain what students are learning, why it is important and how it connects to what they already know. New concepts are taught in small, manageable steps, with regular opportunities for practice and feedback.

Teachers use the Gradual Release Model (sometimes called the “I do, We do, You do”) approach:

  • I do – the teacher demonstrates and explains a new concept or skill.
  • We do – students practise together with the support of the teacher.
  • You do – students apply their learning independently.

This is highly interactive and encourages active participation from all students. Throughout the lesson, teachers regularly check for understanding, provide guidance and help students build confidence as they develop new skills.

By using explicit teaching, we ensure that all students will have the support they need to succeed and make strong progress in their learning.
