Grade 1 & 2

Literacy

Grade 2 students have continued to learn the persuasive writing genre and practising their very best convincing skills. They have worked hard to start publishing their work and you will see on our window some very convincing pieces about needing 3D printers, guinea pigs, rabbits, wearing free dress on your birthday at school and needing longer playtimes at school! We read The Day the Crayons came Home and then the students in 2D wrote a letter to Mrs Dibb as a crayon lost somewhere at school, trying to convince her to come and fine them and bring them back to the classroom.

In reading we are continuing to practise our fluency, reading in pairs each morning to make improvements in our reading pace, expression and reading the correct words. We are learning to summarise texts by finding the main idea in each paragraph and we are continuing our grammar lessons.

The grade 1's continue to work very hard on learning the different spelling rules. They have learnt about the bossy e which makes vowel sounds long, Floss who helps us know when to double the f, l or s at the end of the word and when to use ck in a word. All the students took part in the phonics testing and did an exceptional job - showing how much they have achieved in their first 18 months of schooling.

In writing the students wrote about why it is either good to have no plans or good to have plans. They were able to state their opinions and give a good reason why they felt that way.

We also celebrated Principals Day this month. All the students wrote a message to Mr Webber and we put them together in a book that he can read each night before bedtime. They loved sharing their writing with him.

Numeracy

In Maths we have been revising our measurment topics of measuring length, capacity and weight. Grade 2's loved measuring and cutting out pixie footprints in our classroom and then marking out their stride length as well as using multiplication and division ratios to work out pixie leg lengths, heights and whether they were walking, running or trotting across the classroom!

Grade 1 have been building their skills in sharing items fairly with and without left overs. They are drawing pictures to show how they have shared items out between the desired numbers. It is great to see the students grasp new understandings, build on their knowledge of counting patterns and the link between that and division.

Friday afternoon Co curricular

Students have enjoyed our Friday afternoon co curricular sessions. The grade 1 and 2 students have been working in mixed groups to complete a range or teamwork activities with Mrs Dibb and some craft based activities with Mrs Eastwood. It has been lovely to see the mixed groups working so well together, showing teamwork and cooperation and having fun!
