Prep - Grade 2 students

Over these past few weeks, our Prep–Grade 2 students have continued to explore the world of Performing Arts through singing, movement, drama, music and mindful listening. Students have been developing their understanding of tempo and beat, discovering that music can speed up, slow down and have a steady pulse underneath the rhythm.

Through drama games such as Pass the Clap, Spaghetti and Make a Machine, students have built confidence in working together, listening carefully, responding creatively and are starting to perform in front of an audience. They have explored instruments including glockenspiels, marimbas, ukuleles and boomwhackers, as well as using scarves and ribbons to respond to different styles of music.

Our students have also explored music and dance from around the world, learning Funga Alafia, Obwisana and dances from different cultures. In our songwriting unit, students have been challenged to create their own songs from a 7 year old who wrote "Eastern Rosellas" after a family trip to Raymond Island (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK5TUycaswc&t=162s). In coming weeks our students will begin creating their own verses for Down by the Bay, experimenting with rhyming words, syllables and musical ideas before performing together.

Each lesson also includes time for mindful listening and reflection, helping students develop their ability to focus, listen and appreciate music. It has been wonderful to see our young performers growing in confidence, creativity and teamwork!
