Persuasive Writing

In our introduction to Persuasive Writing, we began exploring degrees of agreement, arguments and evidence. We looked at a number of debating topics and had to decide where we stood — literally. Then we had to give reasons for our positions.

Our evidence was challenged and we had to consider whether our arguments held up, and which sides were easier to argue because they had stronger evidence — whether we agreed with them or not.

Great discussions! We covered compulsory uniforms, having only healthy foods at school, and school start times.

World Read Aloud Day

For World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday 4th February, Millgrove Seniors did their ‘Build A Story’ activity. As a class we planned a setting and characters. We got into pairs, and were given our sentence starter (1-2 words) and our position in the story. All contributed a piece of the story. We read them aloud, and were pretty impressed that most parts flowed well. When Jake typed them up we made a tiny edit and added another joining sentence, and here’s what we wrote:

  1. One day there was a giraffe and a sloth together on an island in the middle of the ocean.
  2. Everyday the giraffe finds a rock for his collection pile but the giraffe is lonely so the rocks are his only friends.
  3. Until he meets Sloth.
  4. But they had not found any food for a long time and they couldn’t eat for days.
  5. Next, they found a boat under rocks with paddles, it had lots of holes so they fixed them up.
  6. The sloth hid under a table so it wouldn’t get stepped on by the giraffe that had found a treat for the sloth.
  7. Finally, they escaped the island, because they fixed the boat and now from this day they had a ball together and they decided to get married.
