Grade 5

The Grade 5 Team are very proud of the way our students have started their year. They are settling well into the routines of senior school, building positive relationships with their peers and teachers, and developing confidence as they adapt to new expectations. It has been wonderful to see students supporting one another and demonstrating our school values in their daily interactions. We are incredibly grateful for such a positive start to the year and look forward to many more wonderful experiences ahead.
Our Friendology sessions are empowering students to reflect on their friendships and what they mean to them. Through these discussions, students are learning that everybody deserves “Green Zone” friendships – relationships that feel safe, supportive and respectful. By exploring the Friendology framework, students are developing a deeper understanding of what healthy friendships look like, how to recognise them, and the important role they play in supporting their overall wellbeing. These conversations are helping students build the skills and confidence to nurture positive friendships and navigate challenges in thoughtful and respectful ways.
In English, students have been investigating Literature Circles by learning about and exploring the different roles they will take on during discussions. Writing sessions have focused on developing narrative and persuasive texts, while spelling continues to follow the SMART Spelling approach.
In Mathematics this term, students have been working with the four operations, learning methods for double-digit multiplication as well as the process of short division. An underlying focus on place value continues to underpin all of the mathematics our students complete and will continue to do. Throughout these sessions, students are encouraged to think creatively, apply different strategies to solve problems, and develop the skills needed to become confident, lifelong learners.
Our Integrated unit Identity has been highly engaging for students. Through exploring who they are and where they come from, students have developed a deeper appreciation for their family histories. This learning has also encouraged greater respect, understanding and empathy for one another within our classroom community.
Congratulations to our Grade 5 students who attended the Oatlands Swimming Carnival. We were fortunate to have many students progress to the next level. Well done to all that represented Oatlands.
Our highly anticipated first Buddy session with our Prep Buddies was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. We look forward to many more sessions throughout the year where our Grade 5 students will work closely with their Prep Buddies and demonstrate the leadership skills we know they possess.
During Week 7 & 8, our students completed their four NAPLAN tests. We are very proud of the positive mindset they demonstrated especially with the disruptions on the first day. The focus the students showed throughout the testing period really made all of the Teachers proud. Thank you to Mr Brown, Miss Morgan and our technician Michael for ensuring everything online was completed, and to our Grade 3 buddy classes for kindly allowing us to complete the tests in their classrooms.
We are looking forward to a fantastic Term 2.
