CHESS CHAMPIONS!

A big chess win!

I had the pleasure of taking nine students to Yarra Valley Grammar on June 20th for a Victorian school chess tournament.

We swept the board! One of our teams got first place, narrowly beating McKinnon SC. Oliver Cordover of Yr 11 received a trophy for best player overall and Jennifer Morrison of Yr 11 received a trophy for best female player. We will now go on to compete in the finals in Term 4.

The following students participated: Jennifer Morrison, Oliver Cordover, Michael Khamatgaleev (Yr 12), Sasha Sbarski (Yr 9) , Arthur Nguyen (Yr 11), Lloyd Do (Yr 11), Andrey Kostenko (Yr 9), Deveron Vlagsma (Yr 9) and Zac Petrou (Yr 9).

A big congratulations to all the students who participated. You did our school proud with your excellence and team work. I would also like to thank Iain Morrison, who accompanied us as a parent volunteer.

For some of our students, chess mastery runs in the blood. Michael Khamatgaleev's mother - Julia Ryjanova - is a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) and the top Australian female chess player. She will be representing Australia in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September!
