Debating at Heathmont

On Tuesday lunchtime, the highly anticipated Students vs. Teachers debating competition took center stage at Heathmont College. Three of our top student debaters faced off against the formidable Mr. Givens-Lamb, Mr. Babosalac, and Mr. Lawrence on the timeless topic: "Communism is a good idea in theory."

Natasha kicked off by defining communism, backing her stance with compelling examples, but Mr. Lawrence swiftly countered, arguing that a theory can't be "good" if it fails ethically in practice. Not to be outdone, Griffin swooped in with a rebuttal, shifting the focus to humanity’s flaws and arguing that capitalism is riskier than communism. Mr. Givens-Lamb masterfully side-stepped this attack, claiming that Griffin’s attribution to capitalism was a tangent at best, before Mack weighed in with examples of communism’s economic success, only for Mr. Babosalac to rise to the challenge, being awarded best speaker of the day.

As the dust settled, the judges found themselves locked in deliberation. In the end, it was declared a draw—but all participants relished sweet victory, celebrating over a well-deserved box of Toblerone.

A massive congratulations to everyone involved! You really showed off your debating chops by tackling such a challenging topic, making your debating coordinators, Ms. Tedeschi and Mr. Seedsman, incredibly proud!
