TRP Family Survey – What you had to say!

At Glen Waverley Primary School we have been implementing The Resilience Project (TRP) for the past two years as our whole school wellbeing learning. Through the program, students develop knowledge and skills for building resilience through the fundamentals of mental health and wellbeing: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy.

Recently, we asked you about your experience at home with The Resilience Project… and the results are in! For the scaled questions, we asked you to rate how much you agreed with each statement from 1(strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Your responses provide invaluable insight into how we can better enhance our Wellbeing program, not just for the students but for the entire school community.

It is great to see that all our respondents leaned towards agreeing that they knew about TRP, with a great majority of you showing confidence in your knowledge of TRP. Hopefully you have seen TRP mentioned in your child’s home learning tasks, in the e-newsletter or perhaps you have accessed the TRP Family Hub! We strongly encourage all families to take a look all these resources to deepen their understanding of TRP.

Wow, how amazing! An overwhelming majority of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that TRP has had a positive impact on their child’s mental health and wellbeing! Perhaps you may have noticed more positive self-talk, greater problem-solving skills or your child being more open to share their worries and thoughts with you. Maybe you have noticed a decrease in behaviours that concerned you in the past. Whatever it may be, there are visible signs of positive impact you are seeing directly from TRP!

It’s fantastic to see that many families are engaging in conversation with their children about TRP at home! Like all learning done at school, Wellbeing learning can be enhanced when it is revisited and reinforced at home. If you are finding it tricky to engage in conversation with your child about TRP, an excellent gateway is through the GEM Chats which can often be found in your child’s home learning, in the e-newsletters and on the TRP Family Hub.

As we work towards further embedding positive mental health and wellbeing practices across the school, your responses provide direction on our way forward. A strong majority of you said that Compass notifications was the best way to communicate information about TRP, followed by your child’s home learning and through the school e-newsletter. We have heard your preferences, and we will begin sharing further information about TRP and other of our amazing wellbeing initiatives across the school through these communication channels!

We also asked what you were interested in learning further about TRP. Here are some of the common responses we had:

  • Further unpack the specifics wellbeing topics and strategies learnt in class
  • Practical ways to implement skills learnt in TRP
  • How to use the learning from TRP to build a strong support networks between schools, families and the wider community

Please look forward to future editions of the e-newsletter and Compass notifications, as we share further updates on TRP!

It’s clear to see that our school’s very own Wellbeing Specialist program, Mind, Body and Us (MBU), has had a positive impact on your child’s mental health and wellbeing! Together with TRP, our full range of wellbeing programs such as the Stand-Up Project, Cyber Safety Project and MBU provide a holistic approach to addressing mental health and wellbeing needs, including physical, emotional and social wellbeing, both in the offline and online worlds.

Finally, we asked what mental health and wellbeing topics you were interested in learning more about. Here are some of the suggestions that you came up with:

  • Dealing with disappointment and failure (particularly through missed leadership opportunities)
  • Self-regulation and managing emotions
  • Dealing with bullying
  • Transition from Primary to Secondary schooling
  • Navigating friendships and other relationships
  • Navigating safety and wellbeing in the digital world
  • Neurodiversity

We regularly share learning opportunities for families, many of which are delivered as webinars, through Compass. Most recently we shared a webinar on parenting presented by Dr. Justin Coulson and a child online safety webinar presented ThinkUknow Australia. We will continue to notify you on upcoming learning opportunities related supporting your child’s wellbeing, so make sure your notifications are turned on for Compass!

Thank you so much to everyone who shared their opinions and ideas in this brief survey – the information in here is golden and will help guide us in our next steps in Wellbeing at GWPS. We will be sending out an invitation to this same survey towards the end of the year. Regardless of whether you responded this time or not, we would love to hear from you again! If you have any further feedback, questions or concerns related to the school’s wellbeing programs please feel free to contact myself, Ryo Sugihara. I am happy to talk in person or you can contact me via email on ryo.sugihara@education.vic.gov.au or by calling the school on (03) 9802 9938.
