Middle Group News

This term, students have been developing their mental mathematics skills through regular practice using a variety of number strategies.

They are building confidence and fluency in solving calculations mentally, applying flexible thinking, and selecting efficient strategies to solve problems accurately.

Students have also been working on practical money concepts, including recognising the value of coins and notes, calculating totals, and solving real-world money problems.

In addition, students are developing their understanding of mathematics through worded problem-solving tasks, where they apply their number knowledge and reasoning skills to interpret, plan, and solve everyday mathematical situations.

Middle School students have been participating in the Smoothie Bar program as part of their Literacy and Numeracy learning. This authentic learning experience requires students to plan, prepare, and operate a smoothie service for staff and students. Through this program, students develop practical literacy skills by reading recipes, following instructions, communicating with customers, and completing orders. Numeracy skills are strengthened through measuring ingredients, handling money, calculating costs, and managing stock levels.

The Smoothie Bar provides students with valuable opportunities to apply their learning in a real-world setting while building confidence, teamwork, and workplace readiness skills.

Aditionally, students in the Middle Literacy Program have been developing their digital media presentation skills, using a range of tools to communicate ideas creatively and effectively.

Throughout the term, students have also been building their confidence using Canva, becoming more independent in accessing and completing their learning tasks.

A highlight of the term was our excursion to ACMI, where both the AM and PM groups explored the history of television, film, video games, and digital media. Students participated in a bingo-style challenge during the visit, with all students actively engaged throughout the day. It was a fantastic experience and a great opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world examples of media and technology.

Art

This term in the Art room, students have worked on a range of hands-on projects including tie dye T-shirts, iron-on logo designs, quick draw challenges, street art murals and individual creative projects. It's always great to see students developing their skills with different materials and techniques while building confidence, problem-solving, and expressing their own ideas through the creative process.

Food Technology

Students in our FLO programs have been working on a variety of recipes and extending their knowledge that has been developed throughout semester one which includes safe knife skills, reading fractions and learning about food nutrition – we have been specifically looking into protein recently and it has been received well by our students. Their positive attitudes, growing independence, and pride in their achievements have made each session enjoyable and rewarding to observe for staff that help them through their cooking journeys.

Flo Inc

This term in FloInc, students have been developing practical skills through a range of engaging and creative projects. Students have been working with small engines, exploring metal and woodwork techniques, while also designing and creating their own projects using a variety of tools and materials. Students have further developed creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through activities such as operating a student-run nail salon, upcycling recycled materials, and repurposing old items into functional furniture pieces. These experiences promote independence, resilience, creativity, and the development of valuable real-world and vocational skills. Students are also excited with the arrival of two state-of-the-art 3D printers as they begin exploring STEM learning and emerging technologies. This exciting addition will provide further opportunities for innovation, design thinking, and hands-on learning experiences within the technology field.
