Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a very busy month here at St Anthony’s and it feels like this term has just flown.

Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students who have completed their Naplan tests. The students followed all test protocols throughout and the online tests went through smoothly. While we use the Naplan data to track our focus for improvement as a school, and look at growth between the year 3 and year 5 cohort, it is important to remember that it is only a snapshot of a student’s performance on a single day. The teachers teach, monitor and assess students regularly and know each student’s abilities and what they need to learn next.

This Term we have delved deeper into the Vision for Instruction. Our teachers have trialled a number of full participation strategies in mathematics and literacy teaching and we can see how the structures and processes of explicit instruction are having an impact on our students.

What is explicit instruction?

Explicit instruction involves teachers introducing complex skills in small steps, with clear explanations and demonstrations of what students are expected to learn. Students then practise what they learned and receive feedback from their teacher until the skill is mastered.

How can you help at home?

Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning journey.

Here are some ways you can enhance their learning:

• Communicate with teachers: Maintain regular contact with your child’s teachers to understand classroom objectives and methods.

• Encourage and celebrate practice: Provide opportunities for your child to practise new skills, and celebrate their effort and progress.

• Create a structured environment: Establish a distraction-free study area at home.

• Promote reading together: Spend time reading with your child regularly. Discuss stories, characters and themes to enhance comprehension.

• Encourage critical thinking: Engage in discussions that promote reasoning and explanation.

• Model a positive attitude towards learning: Demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning and curiosity. Show your child that learning is a lifelong journey, and encourage them to explore new ideas and interests.
