From the Classroom

English in Year 3/4

This term students have been deeply engaged in a thought-provoking English program centred around the theme of Sustainability, with a strong focus on the idea that “Plastic is NOT Fantastic!”

Through a range of rich mentor texts, students have explored the environmental impact of human actions and considered how they can make a positive difference in the world around them. One of the key texts we studied was Walk of the Whales by Nick Bland, which sparked important discussions about ocean pollution and the devastating effects of rubbish on marine life. Students showed great empathy and curiosity as they examined how everyday choices can impact sea creatures.

We also explored Iceberg by Claire Saxby, a beautifully written text that follows the journey of an iceberg through the seasons. This story helped students build their understanding of global warming and climate change, encouraging them to think critically about environmental change over time.

Currently, students are enjoying The Lorax, a well-loved story with powerful sustainability themes. They are looking forward to comparing the book with the film adaptation next week, identifying similarities, differences, and the ways messages are conveyed across different formats.

Throughout the term, students have been developing their persuasive writing skills and did a terrific job writing with the prompt 'Don't Waste It'. They also created and displayed impactful posters encouraging others to reconsider their use of plastic and to adopt more environmentally friendly habits. Several students will be presenting their learning at Assembly on the last day of term and we look forward to celebrating their learning with the wider school community. We are proud of how students have broadened their knowledge and made strong connections between their classroom learning and real-world issues.

To continue these important conversations at home, we have attached a document for

families to complete together. How can YOU make a difference?
