EnlighTEN Program

In the EnlighTEN program students studying the ancient Greek play ‘The Birds’ by Aristophanes, have identified the type of bird that best describes their personality. Reading and analysing the play the students also created their bird masks as they attempted to get into the new utopia created between heaven and earth.  

The play is a comedy following two Athenians who are frustrated with the laws and politics of Athens in 440 BCE. They set off on a journey to transform into birds to spread wings and obtain absolute freedom. In this quest they summon all the birds of the world and build a new bird land they call Cloudcuckooland. They realise their strength and power take on the gods of Olympus and win. But do they taint the utopia they first set out to create?
