Treasure Island thank you

Our Year 4 students trod the boards of Elwood Theatre this week with a lively musical retelling of Treasure Island, the classic pirate adventure.

Jim Hawkins joined Long John Silver and a crew of colourful pirates on a quest for treasure, but when they reached the island, they discovered it had been transformed by commercial development, with theme parks, apartments and fast-food outlets.

Guided by the rapping Flint’O’Matic, the pirates journeyed to the untouched side of the island. There they discovered that the greatest treasure isn’t gold – it’s the beauty and wonder of nature!

To our Year 4 students – embarking on a new journey, like performing a show on stage, can be a lifechanging experience. It comes from the groundswell of energy and commitment that the students muster and generate through weeks of rehearsals. For some, it’s not that easy and there’s stuff to overcome along the way. I applaud your courage and long-term commitment (an entire school term + more, for some!) to creating something that’s bigger than each of us and driven by the community behind it. 

Thanks for digging into the dialogue, songs and choreography with gusto, embracing the opportunities within, and bringing your well-prepared ‘best self’ to each performance. Only you can make that happen, and I’m immensely proud of you all!

A special thank you to the Year 4 Teaching Team.Working together with you again this year to create a memorable, amazing and possibly transformative theatre season for our Year 4 students has been delightful. Thanks for looking for ways we can all make the 1% improvements to make the show ‘next level’, especially when rehearsing at the theatre!

An unqualified ‘Thank-You’ to all in the PMPS community who have given so generously of your time, expertise and creativity to make ‘TREASURE ISLAND’ a success.

• Costumes: ‘Thanks’ seems so inadequate, Erin. You started as the Costume Team Leader volunteering well ahead of time, and before long were either assisting or directing most of the Production teams. You clearly have an extraordinary capacity for getting stuff done, and I’m incredibly grateful that you’ve directed so much of your time, skill and expertise toward our show this year. Thanks for making ‘Treasure Island’ a priority against the backdrop of all your other commitments. Your input has been huge and will no doubt become a large part of what students remember for years to come!
• Set Construction: Thanks for stepping in to fill a breach, Erin, and guiding the Set Team when someone else had to step out. Thanks for your vision for the show, and for overseeing the development of all items needed on stage.
• Make-Up: Thanks, Shama & Team. I’m grateful for your organizational skills and for putting together a team who have been so helpful on performance nights! I’m sure the children will remember this for years to come! 
• Props: Thanks, Lauren & Team. Thanks for your speedy resourcefulness and ability to deliver the most bizarre requests!

The lists of willing Production Team helpers show that it takes a community to stage a production. Please accept my thanks for accepting and acting on your part in making ‘TREASURE ISLAND’ come to life.

Student reflections

Staging a production is a mammoth undertaking that requires the time and effort of many collaborators. In our next newsletter, we will share our students’ reflections of what they’ve learned – apart from songs, dances and dialogue(!) – and how they’ve grown personally as a result of being involved.
