Kii 3/4S families!

This fortnight, our class joined the wider school community in celebrating NAIDOC Week through a day of engaging and meaningful learning experiences. The Grade 3/4 students were divided into three groups and rotated through a range of activities that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and knowledge. 

During Art with Antoinette, students explored the vibrant work of Zaachariaha Fielding, drawing inspiration from his artwork, which featured in this year's NAIDOC Week poster. They enjoyed experimenting with colour, pattern and symbolism to create their own thoughtful pieces. With Matt, students learnt about Bush Tucker and discovered how native Australian ingredients have been used for thousands of years. They sampled pancakes flavoured with lemon myrtle and strawberry gum, with many students excited to experience these unique flavours for the first time. During their session with Josh, students learnt about Marngrook, the traditional Aboriginal ball game believed to have inspired aspects of Australian Rules Football. They enjoyed learning about the history of the game before taking part themselves, using teamwork, cooperation and plenty of enthusiasm.

In Mathematics, we began exploring angles, making connections between our existing knowledge of fractions, time and angles. Students investigated whole turns, half turns and quarter turns, discovering how these concepts are closely linked and can be seen in everyday life. 

To help consolidate our learning from our Time unit, you can continue practising telling the time at home. Encourage your child to use the language of past and to, identify quarter past, half past and quarter to, and discuss the time throughout the day. Students have also been practising telling the time to the minute, so regular opportunities to read both analogue and digital clocks will help build their confidence.
