Our focus these past couple of weeks has been the story of King Maximo and the number Knights and Ladies. King Maximo asked his Twelve Knights and Ladies to go on a quest to find out which number is the GREATEST of them all. 

So far, all the Knights have proclaimed that their number is the most important, so the King has yet to choose the greatest number. The children have been retelling the stories using the story telling dolls, drawing shields with number related patterns and practicing their number writing skills. We have also been using Morning Circle time to practice number related poems and games. 

The children have started noticing numbers everywhere!

This process is more than about counting but also an awareness of numbers and their significance in our world.

During our exploration of 6, we found that nature has some magical 6s. We found that every daffodil has 6 petals and that honeycomb in a beehive is made up of six-sided shapes that fit together. Nature is amazing!

The children made honeycomb and daffodil shapes when they found yellow hexagonal tangram pieces. 

“Look, if you put two red ones together, it makes the shape!” Magnolia discovering that two three-sided shapes can make a hexagon.

“Look, if you use 6 triangles it makes the shape!” Maya C discovering that 6 tangram triangles make a hexagon.
