Art

Students in the Year 9 Visual Arts elective have been exploring influential modern art movements, with the first movement being Impressionism. The Impressionist artists painted scenes from everyday life, capturing fleeting moments of time. At the time, these artists were mocked and ridiculed for their loose and free style, but the Impressionists gave rise to what we now call ‘modern art’, influencing the rise of many different abstract and conceptual art styles, both 150 years ago, until the present day.

Students explored creating artwork studies en plein air (French for ‘in the open’, or outside), and just like the Impressionists, they were challenged to work quickly, capturing a fleeting scene of what was in front of them in that exact moment, they created a ‘study’ rather than a perfectly finished work.

Below are some impressive examples capturing a moment in time in the landscape of Yarrabing on a warm, stormy summer day in 2026.
