Annual House Athletics Carnival

You could hear the cheering from a distance. Up close, the Domain Athletics Centre was a sea of colour, with eye-popping yellows and screaming reds and all sorts of wonderful characters for the Senior School’s Annual Athletics Carnival.

He was never going to be a pacer but who would have thought that a gigantic red dinosaur could run 800 metres? He flagged halfway, his size perhaps hindering his speed, but a little reassurance from a winger and a few cheers from the sidelines saw him gather some last-minute momentum and muster a sprint to the finish.

A team of yellow Teletubbies was out in force for Joyce House, an even taller red Teletubbie for Hessian, Dwyer had a monster green T-Rex, a blue Superman for Doyle — everywhere it seemed there were other curious characters spurring on their mates, all in good-natured, but fierce, House rivalry.

The Heads of House were seriously upping the stakes, with Joyce Master Contender, Mr Mathew Scott, even coming out on crutches.

There were 100m sprints, 800m runs, long jumps, shotput, javelin, discus, all being timed and measured diligently by all the teachers and staff.

The novelty tyre race went down a treat but the tug-of-war saw the fiercest competition. It was a battle of brute force until one side got the marker over the middle, usually when the first warrior fell defeated in a heap, amid a group of laughing students.

Congratulations to all members of House Dwyer for winning their third consecutive Annual House Athletics Carnival.

It was a close contest throughout the day between Houses Doyle, Dwyer, and Joyce. Ultimately, a strong finish in the relays and an impressive attendance percentage allowed the green team to secure victory.

1st: House Dwyer - 2930 💚

2nd: House Joyce - 2895 💛

3rd: House Doyle - 2799 💙

4th: House Hessian - 2577 ❤️

We now look forward to the Athletics representative season, with Team sVc participating in the SSATIS Athletics Carnival on Tuesday, March 10, and the SATIS Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 31 March.

Rowing

Congratulations to Team sVc on an outstanding performance at the All Schools Rowing Championships last weekend.

sVc dominated the regatta, claiming the Overall Aggregate Shield and the Junior Aggregate Shield, and — for the first time in the College’s history — winning the Year 10 1st VIII.

A special congratulations to our Year 9 and Year 10 squads, who achieved the remarkable feat of winning every event in their respective age categories — a testament to their depth, preparation and teamwork.

Finn McManamey was the most successful rower of the Regatta, an extraordinary achievement after securing six gold medals from six events.

Alex Lamprey was the fastest rower of the regatta, taking out the School Boys Single scull in a blistering pace of 6 minutes and 27 seconds.

Our 1st VIII delivered a great performance to finish a close second behind Hutchins in a high-quality, fast race. Our Year 7 rowers claimed both the Single and Double Scull Championships, while the Year 8 crew narrowly missed victory in the Division One Quad, finishing just 0.3 seconds behind first place.

Congratulations to all rowers, coaches and staff on a hugely successful weekend. The results reflect the commitment, discipline and culture being built within the program.

The team now turns its focus to the Head of the River on Saturday 14 March.
