Student Wellbeing

Belonging: The Foundation of Wellbeing and Learning
At St John Vianney Primary School, we believe every child learns best when they feel known, valued and connected. A strong sense of belonging is at the heart of our approach to student wellbeing because it lays the foundation for both learning and personal growth.
There is a simple but powerful sequence that guides our work:
Belonging → Engagement → Attendance → Attainment
When children feel that they belong, they are more willing to participate in classroom learning, build positive relationships and take on new challenges. This increased engagement encourages regular attendance, and consistent attendance gives students the best opportunity to achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.
Research consistently highlights the importance of belonging in schools. A large meta-analysis of 82 studies found a strong relationship between students' sense of belonging and academic achievement. In addition, a systematic review of school-based belonging programs found that most interventions had a positive impact, demonstrating that belonging is something schools can intentionally nurture rather than simply hope develops naturally.
At St John Vianney, we foster belonging through welcoming classrooms, positive relationships, inclusive learning environments, student voice, faith, and opportunities for every child to contribute to our school community. Whether it is greeting students by name, celebrating individual strengths, working collaboratively, or supporting one another through our wellbeing programs, every interaction helps build a culture where children feel safe, respected and connected.
When students know they belong, they are more confident to engage, more motivated to attend, and better equipped to flourish in every aspect of school life. Together with our families, we are committed to creating a community where every child feels that they are an important and valued member of the St John Vianney family.
