Woolworths Excursion

We are incredibly proud of our Semester 1 Classroom Waste Warriors and the enthusiasm they have shown in helping our classrooms become more mindful of the waste we create.

To celebrate their efforts, the students participated in a walking excursion to Woolworths in Hampton on Tuesday 4th August with Mrs Whatmore and Mrs Michelle Perpina. During our visit, they returned the soft plastics collected from our classrooms to the store's collection point and learned a little about the recycling process and the exciting new products that Woolworths have created from these materials.

This excursion was a wonderful opportunity for students to see firsthand how their actions can make a positive difference to our environment and to further develop their understanding of sustainability and responsible waste management.

We met with the store Manager, Mark, who taught us how Woolworths is making a difference with their soft plastic collection. The students got to place their own bag into the drop off zone and Mark showed the students the trolleys that are made out of recycled plastic bottles and the green bench at the entrance that is made out of recycled plastic bags. 

We also learned about the many programmes that Woolworths has, like their own recycling programme for cardboard and plastics from all the cartons coming into the store. In regards to responsible waste management, did you know that food that is near the best by date or chilled food that is close to date, gets frozen and then sent to local organisations like Ozharvest or the Hampton RSL to help the Veterans.

The students were delighted to hear more about Ooshies and how sustainable they were being 97% recyclable. Mark surprised the students with some special Ooshies to take home.

The students returned from this local excursion buzzing with excitement about what they learned. We hope this firsthand experience of being Waste Warriors continues to inspire them to make sustainable choices and care for our environment, helping to create a more sustainable future for all.

We really liked the visit to Woolies because they are really passionate about soft plastics and keeping the environment good. 

I like that you can turn plastic into different stuff like benches and trollies.

I really liked the trip to Woolworths, we really learnt a lot. I realised that Woolworths does a lot more than I thought.

I liked that we learned that the Woolworths trollies are made out of recycled milk bottles. The seats were made out of plastic bags. The Ooshies you return to Woolies can be recycled and made into new Ooshies.

I liked being a Classroom Waste Warrior, I really liked having the badge, I liked being able to help the environment.

Darcy and Max

From our Woolies excursion, we learnt that the Oooshies are 97% recyclable. Woolworths doesn’t only have recycled chairs and trolleys but they have a whole programme just to recycle.

Overall we have learnt about recycling and  how we can save our community from pollution/poverty. Additionally, food that is ready for waste, is given to the poor people who can feed their families with this.

We definitely enjoyed being a Classroom Waste Warrior in Semester 1, I just liked helping the world. If we help the world it will always go well!

On Tuesday at 2pm, the Waste Warriors from Semester 1, went to Woolies with bags full of soft plastics to recycle.

It was very fun, I learnt about soft plastics and how they can become new toys and other stuff. We also learnt that Ooshies are made from 97% recyclable material. Any spares  will get melted down and become new Ooshies. We each got a silver Buzz Light Year Ooshie from Toy Story 5 and 3 Other packs.

We loved being a Waste Warrior last Semester, our favourite thing was collecting rubbish at lunchtime and going to the staff room to show the teachers what we got.

Please keep an eye out for the other donation points near the registers at Woolworths Hampton. 

The Share the Dignity collection helps address period poverty by providing essential hygiene products to those in need, while the Food Donations trolley supports local charities and the Hampton RSL with grocery staples for individuals and families experiencing hardship.

These initiatives are wonderful examples of Social Justice in action, reminding us that even small acts of kindness and generosity can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We encourage our families to support these collections whenever they can and help build a more caring, inclusive and compassionate community.
