SPORTING PATHWAYS 2023/2024

As our 2022/2023 representative sporting pathways slowly come to an end it is time to gather information from our current Year 4 and 5 students for the 2023/2024 sporting calendar of trials. A notification was sent via COMPASS last week to all current year 4 and 5 parents explaining the process of nominations for the upcoming representative sporting trials. It is important that you thoroughly read the cover letter via COMPASS which contains detailed information on representative sport within Sydney Catholic Schools.

For those students who do not trial in a nominated sport, there will be other opportunities to participate in Sporting Gala Days, Interschool Sport and Carnivals.

Below is an extract from this cover note for representative sport…

The Pathway opportunities commence at a school level. If your child is playing at representative level or A grade in their retrospective sport outside of school while displaying a high level of skill development and talent, please nominate your child. Keep in mind they should be playing in regular competition outside of school. These selection trials are not a ‘come and try’ for students. Our school can only send 4 students per sport however there may be some sports where there is no pro-rata limit per school.

If you feel as though your child is within the selection criteria, please complete this Online Form by Thursday 7th September 2023 Only students who have completed the form will be eligible to be considered for final selection. Only nominations for new students at our school will be considered beyond this date.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT

Year 3 League Tag Gala Day (compulsory for all students)

All students in year 3 will be participating in the Sydney Catholic Schools League Tag Gala Day on Tuesday September 12th, Week 9 of Term 3. All year 3 families would have received the details of this event via COMPASS this week. There is no payment for this event for as Sydney Catholic Schools have funded all buses. Please ensure you provide consent for your child. Our year 3 teachers will be forming teams for this gala day by keeping in mind students' experience in the sport and doing their best to have a familiar friend in their team.

If you have volunteered to be a parent manager on the day, Mrs Col will be in touch via email. Please remember this is a half day event. All students will be on organised buses by 9am from school. The gala day will finish by midday, allowing our students to return to school via bus to continue with their regular routine.

Students will need to bring/wear:

  • School sports polo top (playing shirts must be tucked in at all times to reduce finger injuries).
  • Football boots that are rubber moulded cleats only but are not compulsory. Alternatively runners may be worn.
  • Jacket to keep students warm between games
  • School hat (won't need to be worn during games). If you would like to wear a hat during the game it must be a soft wide brimmed hat or an official Oz tag soft peak cap/visor.
  • Oz-Tag shorts or bike shorts are highly advised to wear with the school sport polo top. Shorts with pockets are not allowed unless that are gaffer taped. So alternate shorts with no pockets can be worn. If possible try to stick to black, blue or yellow options.
  • Oz-tag belts will be supplied by SCS for those who don't have oz-tag shorts.
  • No jewellery is permitted.
  • Healthy snacks and lunch with plenty of water. There are no canteen facilities at this venue.
  • Sunscreen

BASKETBALL GALA DAYS

Our Year 3 Boys finally took to the court on Monday for their turn at the Sutherland Basketball Gala Day. They came up against some very strong teams throughout the day and we couldn't be happier with how they handled themselves. Even though the overall score wasn’t in their favour the boys worked so hard, determined to give their team one hundred percent effort until the final whistle blew. I trust the boys will be keen to participate again in 2024.

Thank you once again to all the parent managers who have assisted our teams at the multiple basketball gala days this term. Without your assistance on the day, it simply would not be an option to enter these gala days. The words of encouragement and cheering from parents make it extra special and memorable for our students.

SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE JERSEYS

With many of our larger sporting events wrapping up for Term 3 could all students who have borrowed a representative jersey or singlet please have it washed and returned to the school office. Thank you to the many families who have already done so. We will be doing a thorough stocktake of representative jerseys so we can order more for 2024. We are currently in the process of introducing a new method of jersey distributions for the future. This is to ensure all students representing our school at inter-school sport and through the sporting pathways have their own jersey/singlet to wear.

Community Sport

Audrey P who was selected for the NSW Girls Hockey Team this year would like to see more students get involved in Hockey. Please see the below information on how you can get your child playing Hockey locally.

If you have any sporting news you would like to share with our school community please email me - amanda.col@syd.catholic.edu.au
