Secondary School

On Friday, the 2nd of August, the PSA held its annual Public Speaking Competition at Guildford Grammar School. In preparation for this competition, 5 daring students put their hands up to represent Trinity College across the various age groups. They were:

  • Hasan Mirza 7.7 - Students who do not report bullying should be suspended.
  • Matteo Redolatti 8.3 - That the media should not be allowed to report on the private lives of politicians.
  • Lachie Reid 9.5 - That fiction is better than non-fiction. (unable to attend due to illness).
  • Bowie McCabe 10.7 - That employers should provide both maternity and paternity leave.
  • Zach Mclean 11.7  - That democracy is the best form of government.

Working within a fairly tight time frame - all students wrote thought provoking and humorous speeches which they then memorised in preparation for the big day. Come Friday, they spoke confidently and with aplomb, doing our College proud.

In particular, special mention goes to:

  • Hasan Mirza (Year 7) for winning the Year 7 Knock Out round and progressing to the Junior Final where he had to compete against the other winners of the Year 8 and Year 9 Knock Out rounds. While he did not come away with the overall win, this was testament to his skills and we look forward to more of Hasan’s public speaking over the coming years.
  • Zach McLean (Year 11) for coming Runner-Up in the Senior Competition. Unfortunately, Zach was just pipped at the post by the speaker from Aquinas College, but has vowed to return again in ’25, this time to clinch the trophy for Trinity College.

As we all know, it is quite a daunting experience to stand up and speak with confidence and flair in front of a group of strangers, but these boys did a marvellous job and we look forward to many of them returning for another go in 2025!
