Harvest Time in Brendan’s Garden

The much-anticipated pumpkin harvest day finally arrived! Students were excited to discover that the pumpkin vines and foliage had shrivelled, making the pumpkins easy to spot among the garden beds. Green Team representatives from each class carefully selected a pumpkin to harvest and proudly posed for photos with their chosen pumpkin. The harvested pumpkins have now been placed in the shed, where they will continue to mature before they are ready to be enjoyed.

The students enthusiastically shared many creative ideas about how the pumpkins could be prepared and cooked. A decision about how to use the harvest will be made in Term 3.

The next task in Brendan’s Garden was mulching the garden beds. After the beds had been cleared, students worked together to spread the mulch evenly across the soil. Their teamwork and dedication helped prepare the beds for future planting and will support healthy soil over the coming months.

The final job for the day was harvesting the remaining cos lettuce and snow peas and removing the plants that had finished producing. Students completed this task with great care and efficiency. A highlight of the afternoon was sampling some of the citrus fruit growing in the garden. Many students were eager to try the oranges, selecting the ripest fruit before cutting them open and tasting them. The verdict was overwhelmingly positive, with most students declaring them delicious!

Several garden beds are now empty and ready for the next stage of preparation. Over the coming weeks, they will be enriched with fertiliser in readiness for planting winter vegetables. We look forward to another productive and rewarding season in Brendan’s Garden.
