Rostrum Australia

On Saturday 16th May, five students from Oberon High School participated in Rostrum Australia, the world’s oldest public speaking organisation. Representing the school were three junior students and two senior students, who competed against approximately fifteen students from schools across the region in each division. Participants delivered speeches on a range of thought-provoking topics, including digital detoxes and the power of people.

All Oberon students represented the school with confidence and professionalism, demonstrating strong public speaking skills and resilience in a highly competitive environment. One senior student, Iris Ngyuen, progressed through to the semi-finals. An impressive achievement! Although Oberon will not advance to the finals this year, each student should be commended for stepping outside their comfort zone and speaking publicly with courage and determination despite their nerves. Congratulations to our juniors, Izzy Dyson, Rosy Gray and Amelia Matheson, as well as our seniors Ishan Phule and Iris Ngyuen.

Bottle Cap Competition

What is it?

The Environment Club is collecting plastic drink lids to donate to 'Lids For Kids', a company who recycles plastic drink lids to make into prosthetics for kids. It is important to make this process affordable because as children grow, their prosthetics will need to be changed many times to fit them properly. If this process is too expensive, children can’t get proper prosthetics, which can affect many aspects of their lives.

How to participate?

Students can bring in their plastic lids to the donation box outside of the staffroom next to S5 (see picture). Each box has a different year level, and each Connect group a bag within that box. Students place the lids in the bag, and the Environment Club weighs the bags each week. The Connect group (and their teacher) with the most collected lids at the end of Term 2 wins a hot chip lunch in Term 3. It’s as easy as that!
